Visiting Artist Workshops
Introduction to bringing colored clay into one’s studio practice
This workshop will be hosted by ceramic artist Dustin Barzell.
Have you wanted to bring colored clay into your ceramic work, but don’t know where to start? This workshop will explore an introduction to the use of colored clay. The workshop will cover (1) methods for making colored clay in a studio environment, (2) making, formulating and testing new colors, and (3) an overview of some of the methods Dustin uses for wheel-throwing and hand-building with colored clay. Some experience hand-building or wheel-throwing is recommended but not mandatory.
The first day will be devoted to demonstrating how to make colored porcelain and color tests, including making line blends and testing saturations. Participants will make batches of stock colors to be used the following week. The second day of the workshop will be dedicated to demoing and students experimenting with the use of the colored clay, including: ways to marble on the wheel, slab building (including nerikomi and inlay) and other methods (e.g., extruded coils).
Saturday November 14 and Saturday November 21, 1 – 6pm
